“Science
is life.” These were the very words
Dr. Mulukutla used to tell me when I was a young girl. At that time those words
had little meaning for me-.But A transformation happened in October, 2006, when
Dr. Mulukutla started a science workshop at an Irving recreation center, after which
science really did become part of our life. The Irving Art of Science is a workshop evolved solely for the purpose of
not only helping kids to understand and learn day-to-day science, but also in helping
them love it, while they go about learning it. This is accomplished by teaching
using the aid of hands-on experiments, which both kids and teachers love. Rikhil
Maunduva from Wind song Montessori, who is attending for the past 2 years eagerly waits to explain what
he did Magnolia Byrone is explaining as a helper what is DRY Ice. The experiments help the kids
understand the principles of importance of science and, more importantly, the
wonders of it. Even the teachers learn something at the Irving Art of Science workshops.
Some
University students are volunteer teachers.. Nine schools schools, participate
in the workshop. Students in the process of getting their degrees at the
undergraduate and graduate level., teach in a novel way, the scientific
information , differently than any school regularly does. Younger Students who
have understood the concepts can really teach other students seemingly talking
concepts, in simple terms.
During December
of 2007, eleven kids from Irving Art of
Science went to India for participating in the Indian Science Congress. A
national science congress where scientists and children from India present their science projects The kids from Irving Art of Science did several projects, helping the environment and improving
technology in an eco-friendly way. Of all these projects, the main highlighting
event was the DNA dance. All eleven students put on a spectacular show for a
audience, in which they showed the
cell’s functional and developmental roles in the human body. But, most importantly the DNA dance
contained a message, one through which the students were trying to show, how an
environment and pollution in the environment affects the health of our cells,
and how the health of the cells reflects on the well being of the human body.
Students
from many Schools in the DFW metroplex area have been attending the workshops
held by the Irving Art of Science.
Some of these schools include North Hills High School, Valley Ranch elementary
school, Universal Academy, Mockingbird Elementary, Old Settlers, Cistercian,
Highlands, Austin Elementary, Windsong Montessori, Cottonwood Creek elementary
and several others.
This workshop— in fact- a non-profit organization has been a
part of Alabama ‘s CRY program..Priya Chitta, a 10th grade Coppell
High School, student and , Dr. Mulukutla have gone to Alabama to initiate the workshop proceedings.
In the year 2009, the workshop is
extending its activities to summer programmes.
The summer program commences on June1st and ends on July 31st . The projects
are ay hands on .driven and eco friendly.
The primary motto of the Irving
Ar t of Science is to promote the
global issues confronting the environment.
